I decided to give myself a challenge and chose faces because I had no idea how to draw a face. (not sure that I do yet). The journey so far has been a surprise. I have found I do not like doing portraits of real people. I still use my normal method of mark marking. In the beginning I started with the ‘oval’ the dissections for the eyes, nose, mouth etc. The basic rules were a must of course but I soon went off on my own ways.
It is interesting to see the differences of each day. Creating depends on time, mood, circumstances and tools. The paper in this book is very thin so I can only use biro, pencil, conte, charcoal and coloured pencils. There are many accidents through the pages, seeping and pressure marks and just plain bad drawing but they are all part of the whole journey. I also practice different methods that I have never used; cross hatching is the latest and I can honestly say I have made many messes but the old saying practice makes ? well … we shall see 🙂
The most exciting thing that has happened, is each of the faces tells their own story. I like to write short stories so I will have 365 prompts.
It is fun, it is frustrating. This book is not about perfection by any means; it is about practice and fun and more than anything , surprises.
I recommend to anyone to start your own challenge whatever it may be. It is amazing what is living inside you waiting to get out.
I hope you enjoy my every growing family …
